A right response to disappointment begins with resisting the natural tendency towards bitterness. If someone else was involved in the situation, don’t be quick to judge his or her conduct. Therefore, dealing with disappointment is mandatory. However, disappointment comes in all sizes. Any time your hope are not realized or your expectations or desires are not fulfilled, you feel disappointed.
Disappointment is the feeling of dissatisfaction that follows the failure of expectations or hopes to manifest. In the world today many people feel disappointed and let down by their circumstances. But the way a person responds can make all the difference. Frustrations can be either an opportunity for spiritual growth or a destructive blow. Every day, people deal with disappointment. Depending on how big the disappointment is and how you deal with it, this feeling may disappear after a short while, or hang over your life for a long period of time. If not dealt with properly, disappointments can lead to depression, and eventually apathy. Every time you feel disappointed, it means there is an error in your framework of reality. You feel disappointed because you had an expectation and it was not met. It could be from not winning a competition that you trained heavily in. Or investing in a friendship, where the friend did not reciprocate your effort. Or putting yourself on the line for your job, but getting laid off as your boss did not appreciate you. Each time, you had an expectation that was not met, and when confronted with the truth, you became disappointed.
Disappointments are common to all of us and each one of us has our own coping mechanisms. It should be noted however that the grace of God is the greatest coping mechanism of all and how we respond to disappointments determine whether or not will experience his grace. Sometimes disappointment can’t be overcome, only endured. In moments like that it is important to remember that you have hope on your side. Hope in God’s love, hope for better days to come, the hope to try again. So when the storms of life come your way don’t let yourself be troubled, instead pick yourself up and remember with God there will always be hope. Whatever you may be going through remember to hope in the Lord.
One of the easiest way of dealing with disappointment is to deal with your emotions. When dealing with any difficult and unexpected life circumstances. You need to experience your emotional reaction to the event. It is important to let yourself feel so that you can figure out what the event means to you. Don’t be tempted to make any important decisions at this point or even to take action on your feelings. It may be a few hours or a few days before you reach a calmer state of mind; when you do, only then should you act. Because disappointments cause many undesirable emotions. They become harmful to you and people around unless you handle it properly.
Another easiest way to deal with disappointment is to review your expectations. When you take a good look at your expectations, you will be getting closer to a true understanding of the event. Perhaps your expectations were unrealistic. Perhaps they could be adjusted a little to cope with this new reality. Either way, now is the time to question whether these expectations actually serve you.
To deal with disappointment, you must put yourself in a better mental state. Whenever you experience disappointment, you are pulled down to a lower state of consciousness, where your thoughts are predominantly rooted in fear, sadness, grief, or apathy. There may be times when the feeling of disappointment is so overwhelming that it feels like the end of the world. Being trapped in such a state prevents you from thinking logically. Bring your consciousness up to a more neutral or positive level such as desire, neutrality, willingness, or reason, so that you are in a better position to react to your situation. Do whatever makes you feel better. Sometimes, simply spending time alone may be the best way to clear your mental clutter and regain personal energy. If taking a stroll along your neighborhood makes you feel relax, then get out of your house and enjoy the breeze outside.
To deal with disappointment, you must not blame others. Blame is a very common method people use to cope with the pain of disappointment. Some people blame God for disappointments they face in life. People who overcame their disappointments actually never blamed God. Some blame others, but worsens the situation most of the time. Don’t give room to the spirit of blame in your life.
